Science
At Ogbourne, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The intent of our science curriculum is to develop curiosity in children about the world around us as well as our universe. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of key substantive and disciplinary knowledge which builds the children’s understanding of the four big ideas for Science.
Through our Science curriculum, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific enquiry. We ensure that the Working Scientifically enquiry types are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, planning and conducting investigations, asking questions and being curious about their surroundings.
Geography
At Ogbourne, Geography is taught as a discrete subject with links made to other curriculum areas where appropriate.
Our learning is structured around eight key geographical concepts: human features, human processes, natural features, natural processes, climate, interdependence, resources and maps & data. In this way, we can support children in developing their geographical knowledge progressively each year.
Children engage in learning about diverse people and places, using different geographical resources, including a range of maps, images and charts.
History
We teach history as a discrete subject at Ogbourne with historical knowledge building throughout pupils’ time at school.
In KS1 pupils begin by exploring their own lives and recent history, they then learn about the lives and legacies of prominent individuals such as Amelia Earhart and Christopher Columbus. They also study how Ogbourne school was different in the past.
At KS2 key events and concepts are taught in chronological order, beginning with the Stone Age up to and including Swindon’s industrial past and World War 2, which will help pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of not only Local history, but also Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
Art
At Ogbourne, we love teaching art and we want our children to love it too! Our intent is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils by introducing them to a broad range of techniques, media, arts and crafts makers right from their first weeks in school. As children progress through the art curriculum they will gain an understanding of how art reflects and shapes our history and how it contributes to the culture and creativity of our world. We want children to really learn how to look – and look again – at their own surroundings as well as learning from other cultures. We have carefully selected a wide range of diverse artists, craftmakers and designers from the present day and the past to study. We aim for children to be able to use art as another means of expressing their ideas and feelings as well as to be inspired to become the architects, graphic designers, fashion designers, illustrators, artists, curators and printmakers of the future.

Design and Technology
At Ogbourne, it is our intent that Design and Technology is an inspiring, practical subject which encourages children to use their imagination and creativity to solve real life problems. It is our aim that children will gain a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Children will follow the process from planning to developing and finally evaluating their work. By evaluating past and present technology, children will develop an understanding of the impact of design on our daily lives and on the wider world. We hope they will be inspired to become the designers, engineers, food scientists, architects and craftspeople of the future.
French
At Ogbourne, our intent in teaching French is to introduce children to the delight of being able to communicate with people from a different country. We believe that teaching a second language opens a child up to a whole new culture and way of life, broadening their minds and fostering respect and curiosity. We teach practical lessons that will empower children to order food, buy tickets, ask directions and talk about themselves.
RE
In our multicultural world, RE is one of the most important subjects to teach. It helps children understand the similarities and differences between people of many faiths and none, building bridges and fostering relationships between communities. We encourage open-mindedness towards and respect for people of different faiths to ourselves and how people of all faiths can learn from the wisdom of others.
Music
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. (The National Curriculum)
Music teaching at Ogbourne C of E Primary School aims to follow the specifications of the National Curriculum; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills. At Ogbourne, we believe that music plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. Through worships and key stage performances, children showcase their talent and their understanding of performing with awareness of others.
Lessons enable children to develop their skills, appreciate a wide variety of music and begin to appraise a range of musical genres.
The aims of our music curriculum are to develop pupils who:
- Enjoy and have an appreciation for music.
- Listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, cultures, styles and traditions.
- Can sing and use their voices to create different effects.
- Create and compose music, both on their own and with others.
- Use a range of musical language.
- Make judgements and express personal preferences about the quality and style of music.
- Take part in performances with an awareness of audience.
Computing
Computers are now a key part of children’s everyday lives at both home and school. It is our intent that children will leave Ogbourne C of E Primary School not just confident using a range of devices and applications but also with an understanding of how they work. As children’s lives increasingly move online, we want the children to know how to keep themselves safe and how to make the most of the digital tools at their fingertips. We want to kindle in the children a knowledge and enjoyment of computer science and STEM learning which they can take forward into their future learning.
PSHE
Research shows that there is a link between a pupil’s wellbeing and positive mental health and academic achievement. Therefore, at Ogbourne, we believe Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is a vital part of our children’s education. In this technologically ever–changing world, it is our intent that when our pupils leave our school they will have high self-esteem, the ability to talk about their feelings, an understanding of consent, respect for themselves and others, and know what positive relationships look and feel like. In addition, we want them to value and respect differences between themselves and others. We also hope that our children are confident, resilient and happy, and have been equipped with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions to keep themselves safe. We use the SCARF scheme to support our teaching of PSHE including Relationships and Sex Education.

Physical Education
Ogbourne Primary recognises the value of Physical Education (P.E). We fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for Physical Education to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time and engage in competitive sports and activities. We hope this will inspire the children in our school to lead healthy, active lives. We participate in a number of competitive tournaments against schools from our local area to promote teamwork and competitive spirit. The tournaments are aimed at all children, and throughout their time at Ogbourne, all children will be given the opportunity to participate. Our PE curriculum is supported by Get Set 4 PE.
